Prepare Your Kitchen Appliances for Thanksgiving

Prepare Your Kitchen Appliances for Thanksgiving

Prepare your kitchen for Thanksgiving by checking the refrigerator and dishwasher before the busy cooking day, then using your manuals to handle routine cleaning and settings. Finding a cooling, drainage, or heating problem early gives you time to decide on service or an alternative plan.

This is a readiness checklist. For cooking, electrical, and disposal hazards during the meal itself, use our separate Thanksgiving appliance-safety guide.

About a week before: test normal operation

Refrigerator and freezer

Check temperatures with appliance thermometers, confirm the doors close fully, and clear blocked interior vents. Look for new leaks or a recurring code. USDA refrigerator guidance recommends refrigerated food at 40°F or below. Do not use a single display reading as proof that every area is holding temperature.

If the refrigerator runs longer than usual, compare the circumstances with our constant-running checklist. For reduced ice production, review seven ice-maker checks rather than assuming the entire refrigerator needs replacement.

Dishwasher

Run a normal load while you can observe it. Confirm that the cycle completes and check for new leaks, drainage trouble, or error codes. Clean the removable filter only as directed for your model. If dishes stay dirty, first review loading and the manual’s detergent guidance.

Oven or range

Use the appliance’s ordinary cooking function early enough to notice a recurring heating error or other fault. Follow the manual for approved cleaning methods. If the range smells of gas, sparks, or shows electrical damage, stop using it and seek the appropriate professional; do not adjust connections yourself.

A few days before: make room and finish routine cleaning

Arrange refrigerator space so vents remain open and raw ingredients can be kept separate from ready-to-eat food. Wipe accessible door seals and check that stored trays do not prevent closure. Do not try an unfamiliar deep-cleaning procedure just before you depend on the appliance.

Empty clean dishwasher loads and keep the kitchen sink area usable. Follow your disposal’s instructions if you have one; scrape unsuitable scraps into the appropriate waste container rather than assuming every food can go down the drain.

On the day: keep the plan simple

  • Keep refrigerator doors open only as long as needed while preparing food.
  • Use the cooking settings and cookware specified by your appliance and recipe instructions.
  • Load the dishwasher according to its rack and spray-arm guidance.
  • Respond to a new fault instead of repeatedly resetting or forcing an appliance to continue.
